#2 of 25 – Murals in Umbrella Alley (Fishermans Wharf)

San Francisco has lots of areas with murals. And, here’s another Instagrammable spot full of gorgeous ones. This one is across town in Fisherman’s Wharf, which is a highly touristy area of San Francisco. During the Covid pandemic, local businesses and restaurants suffered greatly (and are still recovering); so Umbrella Alley was created to celebrate and promote the hard-hit travel and hospitality industry and the murals were painted during the 14 month shutdown. So this just fully opened recently in May/June 2021.

Currently (as of July 2021), there are about 7 completed murals and 4 more under construction. The murals here are selected to reflect San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf, and California, and are painted in bright colors to encourage joy, fun and laughter. And since the purpose is to support artists in San Francisco who had a difficult time during the lockdown, there is a suggested donation of $5 to support and help hire more artists.

Current murals include a giant “Greetings From San Francisco” postcard by Maxfield Bala , “I left My Heart In San Francisco” mural & “See the World” mural by 3nolam. New murals include Fnnch Fisherman’s Wharf Honey Bear, GATS mask, Yonmeister Beach Street Gang & a Kate Tova heart. The “Summer of Love Monarch butterfly” by Maxfield Bala joins a butterfly migration by Jeremy Novy.”

Hours: Wednesday through Sunday, 10am till sunset.

Location: 757 Beach Street in Fisherman’s Wharf, near Ghirardelli Square and Aquatic Park. Or better yet, you can take Beeba and your driver drop you off to take your Instagram photos before you move on to the next spot!

Pro tip: They’ve just installed a balloon ceiling, so try to come when the alley is blanketed in balloons – it makes for an even better photo! And watch out for the Segway tours that come through this alley during certain times of the day. We wouldn’t want you to get run over.
